Our History
Established in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., Kiwanis International originally bore the name Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers. Within a year, it evolved into Kiwanis, chosen by its founders for its translation, “we build,” from the Algonquian Native American language. Concurrently, the organization's global footprint commenced with the inception of the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Initially centered on business networking, Kiwanis pivoted to prioritize service, particularly to children, in 1919. Subsequent years saw the proliferation of clubs across the U.S. and Canada, leading to international expansion approved in the 1960s. Presently, Kiwanis boasts clubs in nearly 80 nations and regions worldwide.
Kiwanis Southern Philippine District
The Kiwanis Southern Philippine District (KSPD) began its formal journey on October 1, 1975, marking a pivotal moment for Kiwanis International's reach within the Philippine archipelago. This establishment provided a structured framework for Kiwanis's service-oriented mission to flourish across the geographically diverse regions of Visayas and Mindanao.
Prior to this, individual Kiwanis clubs existed, but the creation of the district allowed for a more unified and coordinated approach to community service. This organizational step was crucial in ensuring that the core values of Kiwanis, particularly the dedication to serving children, could be effectively implemented across a wide and varied landscape.
Today, the Kiwanis Southern Philippine District continues to be a dynamic and impactful force for good. Its member clubs remain actively engaged in a wide array of community service endeavors, adapting to the evolving challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
